Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Palm Coast District Curriculum

In Language Arts, students begin laying foundations for reading literature and informational text, writing, speaking, listening, and language use. Students increase their knowledge of rhetorical strategies, print and digital texts, writing strategies, formal and informal speaking, and vocabulary. High school students learn to analyze and construct meaning from texts, read texts from different times and places, conduct research, and communicate effectively through writing and speaking.

In Mathematics, students begin to master number operations in base 10, measurement, data, geometry, arithmetic patterns, and fractions. In middle school, students hone skills in geometry, measurement, data analysis, fractions, decimals, ratios, expressions, equations, and algebra. By the time students graduate high school, they should understand polygons, mathematical reasoning, data analysis, operations, geometry, measurement, expressions, equations, and personal finances.

Chalk Talk: How to Make Math Homework More Fun

Math is not many people’s favorite subject, but it is essential to living a successful life. If your student is struggling with math homework, try to make it as pleasant as possible. First, set the timer for about 15 minutes and agree to work intently for that amount of time. Next, sit down with the student and work through problems together. Use fun manipulatives like macaroni, marbles, or real money. Change word problems to make them more relevant; for example, use your own town instead of the town mentioned in the problem. When the timer goes off, move on to another subject or take a quick break. Praise the student for what was accomplished and return later to finish what needs to be done.
