Chalk Talk: Divisions of the Nervous System
The nervous system can be separated into two main divisions: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Each division contains different structures and has different responsibilities. The central nervous system contains the brain and spinal cord. This system is your body’s control center and processes all of the information that is sent to it to keep the body functioning normally. It also controls aspects of your personality, emotions, language, and many other higher functions. The rest of the nervous system comprises the peripheral nervous system. The cranial and spinal nerves, as well as any other receptors and neurons are included. This system can be further divided into the somatic and autonomic nervous system. Each of these systems is responsible for the stimulation of muscles and tissues in the body. More specifically, the somatic nervous system controls your skeletal muscles, such as the muscles in your hands, legs, and neck. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for the stimulation of involuntary muscles, such as your bladder, intestine, and veins.
