Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Paramus District Curriculum

The Common Core State Standards set forth guidelines for what should be taught at each grade level in math and language arts. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards delineate what students should be able to know and do in seven core subject areas: social studies, 21st Century life and careers, world languages, health and physical education, visual and performing arts, technology and science.

The science curriculum drives student learning in the earth, life and physical sciences. In life sciences, elementary students acquire the tools necessary to investigate and compare basic characteristics of plant and animal life. Students learn how to classify organisms as plants, animals or non-living things. In middle school, students learn about the systems of the body, their functions and their interrelationship with one another. Once in high school, student learning focuses on the cellular level, where students conduct experiments on enzymes, examine the structure and function of various molecules and analyze the cause of diseases.

Chalk Talk: Advantages of the Common Core

In an effort to standardize the skills and knowledge students acquire in math and language arts, 45 states have adopted the Common Core State Standards. In addition to standardizing what students are taught across the nation, the Common Core standards have the advantage of increased rigor. Typically, schools have focused on a very wide range of topics with very little specificity. The Common Core seeks to reverse that by reducing the number of concepts covered while increasing the depth of focus on each topic. By digging deeper into each concept, students develop a better understanding of the topics under study, while improving higher-ordered cognitive skills such as synthesis and analysis.
