Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Paris District Curriculum
Bourbon County School District curricula follows the general areas of study as enforced by the Kentucky Department of Education, but includes PE, music, technology, family living, and dance/drama courses additionally. Middle school students who opt to take the family living course learn things like why people need to work to meet their basic needs, and how they can accomplish this by examining both personal and societal needs. In 8th grade, students learn financial management practices in the family living course and will successfully be able to plan for their own goals.
Paris Independent Schools, the smaller of the two districts, also enforces the Core Academic Standards, and pairs with the local Maysville Community College, allowing seniors in high school a dual credit program. Seniors can take college-level courses for college and high school credit through the community college, and up to 40 percent of its graduating seniors will leave high school already having at least 3 college credits under their belt.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a Tutor
If you’ve already decided you would like to enlist the services of a tutor, it’s helpful to know what to look for in your selection process and how to be certain you are getting someone who knows what they’re doing. First, ask the potential tutor where they received their education and what they studied. Ask them if they have any background or experience in the subject matter that you need the most help in. If they say they do but they have very little demonstrated experience, it might be best to move on to your next potential candidate as you need someone with a strong command of the subject if they are going to be tutoring you. Have the tutor explain their approach to teaching and tutoring and ask what is expected of you throughout your sessions. Don’t forget to ask for references; this can be the only way to ensure that your tutor has the appropriate experience you’re looking for.
