Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Park City District Curriculum

The goal throughout the Park City Schools curriculum is to produce students who are capable of thinking critically and using their knowledge to solve real-world problems. This metric motivates the curriculum for students of all grades and skill levels. It means that elementary school students focus on learning not just the basic skills of reading and arithmetic, but the ‘why’ behind math problems, and how to think analytically about what they are reading.

In high school, students take a wide variety of courses, but the goals are the same: to make sure that they have mastered the skills that will enable them to be successful in their post-graduation careers. Students take integrated mathematics courses, which bring together the fields of algebra, geometry, and basic statistics in order to make sure that students understand how these fields work together in real circumstances. Similarly, students read large amounts of informational texts in all their classes, alongside the literary texts they read.

Chalk Talk: When to Seek Tutoring

Tutoring can be a great tool to improve a student’s classroom success. While most schools will offer some support to struggling students, often this isn’t enough, and private tutoring can help students who don’t qualify for in-school tutoring or can supplement in-school support. At the same time, students may simply need a more one-on-one style to learn their best; tutoring can be a great help in that circumstances. Other students may be bored with the pace or subjects they are learning in school, particularly if they are gifted, and may need additional tutoring in order to make sure that they stay engaged and can explore their interests to their full potential.
