Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Park Forest Village District Curriculum

Kindergarten students not only begin learning the fundamentals of reading, writing, and numbers, but also participate in activities which encourage positive social interaction and friendship development. Character education and developing the ability to join in on community efforts is emphasized. With this foundation, students go through the next elementary years building on the math and reading comprehension skills they have learned and preparing them for more advanced learning experiences in later grades and life beyond high school.

High school students not only continue learning core subjects, they are also encouraged to choose a program of study. These include accounting and finance, agricultural science, architectural drafting and design, automotive technology, diversified occupations, engineering, and culinary arts, just to name a few. Students are thus prepared to study further or go into a chosen vocation in their post-secondary life.

Chalk Talk: Preparing Your Child for Kindergarten

Kindergarten is the next stop in your child’s developmental process. How can you prepare them? Think about a few basic areas to concentrate. These include social readiness. You can help your child be ready for kindergarten by leaving them with other adults so that they grow accustomed to not having you there all the time. Also providing opportunities for them to play with other children will help. Children should also have some exposure to skills such as play-dough manipulations, stacking blocks, cutting paper with child-safe scissors and other similar skills. Creativity is a good thing in kindergarten. Having your child draw their world is great. Encourage them to play and act out real or imagined stories. Also help your child learn how to count to ten and sort items by shape or size or some other qualifier. Help your child learn to listen and follow directions. And never forget there are huge advantages from reading with and to your child. These and other things will help your child be ready for kindergarten.
