Park Ridge District and Curriculum

The Park Ridge curriculum is based on the Illinois Common Core standards which emphasize a strong base of practical and conceptual knowledge, opportunities for critical thinking, and real-world application of learning. The science curriculum is based on the Next Generation Science Standards which are intended to prepare students for college and career by implementing key foundational concepts relating to the physical world and exploring more complex ideas in science and engineering at the higher level.

We currently cover the following Park Ridge-area school districts: School District 64 and Maine Township High School District 207.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Park Ridge District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, the curriculum emphasizes the study of nonfiction and complex texts and writing analytical essays in order to enhance students’ abilities to gather information and use evidence to back their claims while also expanding their vocabularies. Students may read some fiction and write creatively. The focus is on analytical writing and reading nonfiction in order give students the necessary skills for college academics.

In Mathematics, the curriculum encourages a focus on key concepts at the elementary level and then moving on to more advanced topics in middle and high school when students have mastered these foundational ideas. Faculty explore these key concepts more in depth rather than touching on multiple topics in order to ensure this mastery. The hope with all of these subjects is that students will be able to apply their skills to real world problems and challenges, which will enable them to be well-prepared to compete on a global level.

Chalk Talk: Regular Decision vs. Rolling Admissions

There are many types of college applications with many advantages and disadvantages. Regular Decision is exactly what it sounds like. There are no bells and whistles; students apply by the deadline, which may be December 1st or later. One drawback to this is that colleges won’t read the application until the deadline passes, so even if the student applies early, s/he still won’t hear back with a decision until well after the deadline. Rolling admissions is an antidote to the waiting. With rolling applications, the student applies as s/he normally would, but the college reads the application as it’s received. Rolling applications tend to result in a response within two to three weeks, which is a lot more attractive to many students than waiting what can end up being months. Not every school offers Rolling, though. But for those that do offer it, rolling admissions is a great option.
