Parma District and Curriculum
Assessments conducted by the Ohio Department of Education concluded that the Parma City School District is doing an outstanding job with its students. The Parma City School District has a rating of “excellent,” the second-highest possible rating. Parma earns that distinction through its commitment to Ohio’s New Learning Standards and its success in applying them across all grade levels.
We currently cover the following Parma-area school district: Parma City School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Parma District Curriculum
The mathematics standards in Parma call for young students (kindergarten through second grade) to focus on spatial relations and geometry. Students progress from here into number sense and the foundations of algebra in grades three through five. High school students concentrate on algebra, advanced geometry, statistics and probability.
The focus of the Language Arts curriculum is on reading comprehension, writing, speaking persuasively and fluently, and listening. Parma City School District insists that the development of these skills is not only the responsibility of the Language Arts department; social studies, history, science, and other subject areas must actively participate in the development of these skills. Parma has a variety of resources for students who need extra help in reaching the district’s educational goals, including the English Language Learners (ELL) program for students in all grade levels who have limited proficiency in English.

Chalk Talk: Growing Vegetables - Hands-On Science
Planting and caring for gardens is a recent trend in elementary and middle schools. This is hardly surprising, since it offers students a number of educational benefits. It is a long-term, hands-on science experiment, allowing students to observe and monitor the workings of Mother Nature. Educators can also take this as an opportunity to teach students about nutrition; students may be more willing to try new fruits and vegetables that they have grown themselves. The fresh, unprocessed taste of just-picked vegetables may convince young students that healthy eating is not a chore.
