Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pasco District Curriculum

The Mathematics curriculum in Pasco Public Schools follows the Washington state math standards and secondary students in the district can choose from two mathematics paths. The Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 path builds on skills from the previous course to ensure success in all courses. In the Integrated Mathematics path, ideas are emphasized and skills to understand and master those skills are introduced throughout the series. Students are required to pass three years of math to graduate from high school and either of these paths meets those requirements.

The Science curriculum in Pasco Public Schools also takes an integrated approach to understanding the nature of science. In ninth grade, students take an integrated science course covering Earth Science, Physical Science, and Agricultural Science. In tenth grade, students take an integrated science course covering Life Science and Agricultural Science. In eleventh and twelfth grade, students can choose to take either Chemistry or Physics in either grade. Students are required to pass both the integrated science courses and one of the upper level courses to graduate from high school.

Chalk Talk: Questions to Ask a New Tutor

When hiring a tutor, parents need to interview them just as they would anyone else they are hiring for service. Specific questions will help set the parents’ minds at ease that they are hiring someone that meets their needs. First find out if they have certifications or degrees in specific areas. At times it may be beneficial to hire someone that specialized in the area of the student’s struggles, however these tutors may charge more for their specialty. Next, make sure to ask into references. This is a way to find out about the tutor, especially if they have tutored successfully with other students. Ask them to describe their teaching style. If they are a strict educators, parents need to see if this will work best with their child. Parents can also ask them to demonstrate their method, or ask them to teach a short lesson while observing them. Finally, ask for their goals and methods for the child in question. This lets parents know if the child’s needs will be met.
