About Paterson, New Jersey
Paterson, New Jersey is located in the seat of Passaic County; Paterson is relatively small for its population, covering an area of 22.5 km2 . Paterson has a population of 148,678, and is the 174th most populous city in the United States and the third largest city in New Jersey. However, Paterson is the second most dense city in the United States with a minimum population of 100,00, falling only behind New York City. Paterson was known as the “Silk City”, due to its important role in the silk production industry in the late 1800s. The city was originally founded by the Dutch in their province of New Netherlands, along with Newark and Jersey City. The settlement later came under the control of the British. In 1791 Alexander Hamilton pushed to harness the energy of the nearby falls in order to secure economic independence from the British, leading to the establishment and growth of Paterson. Paterson later became a major influence in the industrial revolution of America
Paterson developed a ton of industrial growth due to the available power of the nearby falls, which powered the mills and factories in the area using aqueducts until 1914. This lead directly to the growth of the city around the mills. As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 146,199 people, 44,329 households, and 32,715 families residing in the city. The population density was 17,346.3 per square mile (6,697.4/km2). There were 47,946 housing units at an average density of 5,688.7 per square mile (2,196.4/km2). In the city, the population was spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32.1 years.
The city of Paterson is a perfect place for residents and tourists to spend their time outdoors or indoors to explore the history and culture that the city has to offer. Whether it is museum, or a play, the city of Paterson has fun for the whole family to enjoy. Below are some attractions located in or around Paterson that are a must visit if you are in the area.
The Paterson Museum
The Paterson Museum was formed in 1925, the first exhibit consisted of natural history objects donated by the local residents. A few years after its origination, the museum moved from the public library to the house of former Mayor Nathan Barnert. Within a few years, the mineral collection there was one of the most formidable in New Jersey. In 1982, the museum was once again moved, this time to the restored locomotive erecting shop, giving visitors the unique opportunity to see artifacts detailing the industrial growth of Paterson. Since its humble beginnings, the museum has stressed the educational aspects of the exhibits. The biggest strength of the museum is the unique collection detailing a unique history: from archaeology and mineralogy to history. The things that made Paterson one-of-a-kind are showcased here, all the innovations and inventions that not only earned the city the name “Silk City”, but also made it the epicenter of the industrial revolution. Things such as locomotive manufacturing, Colt firearms, and Holland submarines. For more information, please visit their website located here.
Lambert Castle (formerly Belle Vista)
“The Castle” was built on Garret Mountain, overlooking Paterson, by Catholina Lambert, who struck riches in the silk industry. The castle was built in 1893, he called it “Belle Vista”, and fashioned it after old English castles. Lambert also owned an elegant assortment of paintings by both Americans and Europeans. In 1896, a 70ft observation tower was added on, as was a summerhouse and dedicated art gallery. Lambert eventually lost his fortune and sold off his collection of artworks, and his son sold the castle to the city of Paterson after his death. For a time, it was used as a tuberculosis hospital, when the deed once again switched hands to the Passaic county park commission, who got permission to establish a museum and library in the building. The art gallery wing was eventually demolished, and the exhibits therein were transferred to the main building. In 1995, the castle underwent a $5 million restoration project, which was finished in september of 2000. This allowed the castle to continue to serve as an artifact and reminder of the gilded Victorian Era, and provides a unique background for those in the community of Paterson. Chalk Talk: Help for Homework Time
Homework can often be a time of struggle between parents and students. There are several ways that parents can help their child stay on-task during homework time and even view it as a more positive experience. First, it is important to establish a homework routine. Designating a set time and place for homework to be done ensures that students can separate play time from work time. Help avoid distractions by making sure all needed materials are gathered before students sit down to work. Let students study in a way that is most comfortable for them (i.e. listening to music). If need be, create a “homework contract” with your child, clearly stating expectations, rewards and consequences. Also, enlist the help of other family members to ensure homework gets done, especially when parental supervision is not possible.
