Patterson District and Curriculum

Residents of the Town of Patterson will attend one of three school districts: Brewster Central School District (BCSD), Carmel Central School District (CCSD), and Pawling Central School District (PCSD). To promote positive relationships with others in the community, the district emphasizes the value, dignity, and worth of every individual. To ensure students have the skills to be successful after graduation, the district also stresses the qualities of adaptability, self-confidence, and self-worth. These broad goals are accomplished by a combination of core curricular standards, character education programs, and opportunities for community service.

We currently cover the following Patterson-area school districts: Brewster Central School District, Carmel Central School District, and Pawling Central School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Patterson District Curriculum

Each district that serves Patterson residents meets the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) standards and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), a set of federal guidelines adopted by the state. The CCSS curriculum focuses on changes within English language arts and mathematics. Administrators and teachers work to ensure that each child meets the appropriate learning objectives through various assessments, including those required by the New York State Testing Program.

The secondary curricula at each middle and high school in the aforementioned districts focus on 21st century training, particularly in literacy, in all subjects. The middle school staffs work toward creating a learning environment where students can enhance their academic, social, and emotional development. Students have access to a variety of courses, in the following subjects: English language arts, science, mathematics, social studies, arts, music, foreign languages, computers, health, special education, physical education, and many enrichment opportunities.

Chalk Talk: Teachable Moments

Many schools honor Martin Luther King, Jr., Christopher Columbus, United States Presidents, and U.S. veterans by providing students with a holiday. While some parents may talk to their children about the holidays or take them to a special event in recognition, numerous children never understand the importance of this recognition. And while some schools remain in-session during these celebrations, few provide in-depth lessons about these heroes. A school day is valuable time for parents, students, teachers, and community members to celebrate these people. Classroom teachers could prepare for the day with student presentations regarding the celebrated subjects. Visitors could include family members, historians, authors, and those being recognized. Students can conduct interviews, listen to stories, and participate in groups discussions. For Veterans’ Day, in particular, students can create care packages and letters to send to troops in combat or to veterans in their communities. We recognize these people, because they made a difference in the quality of our lives. Schools have a unique chance to teach children why and how we should honor difference-makers.
