Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Payson District Curriculum

In elementary Math, students are introduced to the basic concepts behind algebra, geometry, and statistics, along with traditional arithmetic. In Language Arts, they are exposed to a variety of literary and informational texts and require them to show comprehension and critical ability. The goal is to give students problems to solve, so that they will be able to apply the solutions to them in other situations at later points in their education.

In high school, students take a variety of required classes in Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and other fields. Where mathematics is used, the connections between fields of mathematics are emphasized, and the goal is to ensure that students can apply the techniques for advanced mathematics to problems, particularly in the sciences. In all subjects, reading comprehension is an important goal, and students are asked to read widely from informational texts.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a College

There are many factors to consider when choosing a college. Two of the largest are cost and prestige. Cost is determined by many factors; students should consider how factors like in-state tuition, different housing costs, and scholarship availability will affect the cost of their education. Prestige can be important, but often is a quality that you pay a lot for, without a substantial benefit, so don’t overrate it. Other important issues are often overlooked. For instance, do you want a large university with lots of resources, or a small college where you’ll get lots of personal attention? Do you want to be close to family and home, or do you want to move to a new part of the country? Do you want a specific program with a certain certification, or are you still undecided? Be as clear as you can on the answers to these questions; it will help you make the best choice you can.
