Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pearsall District Curriculum
The English curriculum at Pearsall Independent School District helps build reading skills while the students study literary works, both fiction and non-fiction. While studying, the students learn how different authors use different approaches to help make their purpose clear and to reach the audiences. They also learn about how literary tools are used, such as connotations, structure and word origins. Students also develop the skills to distinguish the connotations of words with similar denotations.
To help build students confidence in reading, they need to learn a type of automatic inner dialogue while reading. They do this by asking questions about the story, the words, the characters intentions and so on. As they develop, students will begin to ask themselves the questions automatically. They should ask themselves why they are reading a selection and what they expect to learn, how the material is organized and what they already know about it. Finally, they need to determine if they need to vary their speed to understand new material.

Chalk Talk: Basic Questions for Teachers
At times, it feels like when a child goes to school parents become shy about asking questions concerning the child and their education. Here are some basic questions which every parent should know the answers to. First, every parent has the right to know what the child is learning in class. Every parent has access to the standards that are adopted for their state. This is a list of what a child should know and be able to do at the end of the school year. Each school can decide how it will cover the topics and the methods used. Another issue for parents is how their child is doing. This is evident from grades and comments received by the child but it is also a good idea to ask the teacher to inform the parents if there are special issues. Plus it is also useful to inform the teacher of any special concerns the parent may have, even if it occurs away from school.
