Peekskill District and Curriculum

The Peekskill City School District is committed to providing an educational environment that helps students to meet or go beyond the state standards for excellence, and are prepared for further education and the workforce. The district has implemented Common Core Standards in Math and Language Arts which emphasize the critical thinking skills that emerge in each subject. In addition, the district seeks to provide programs that meet the needs of the diverse student population including students for which English is a second language and those with special needs.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Peekskill District Curriculum

The Peekskill City School District has completely implemented the New York State approved Common Core Curriculum for all grades. In English and Language Arts, students are focused on learning to read, write, listen and speak with a command of the English language. From the early grades students learn to critically analyze their reading material and to discuss and write about their understanding of the reading.

In Math, the expectation is that students will become fluent in Math and be able to apply what they learn to the real world. Bring about the ability to perform mathematic modeling is very big part of the Math curriculum. The main strands of study in Math from Kindergarten through High School is learning computation, geometry, algebra, probability, and statistics, from an elementary level to the complex. All students in New York State High Schools must pass Regents exams in English, Math, Global History, US History, and Science.

Keeping Informed: Recent Peekskill Educational News

  • Quiz Show - Students from Peekskill High School make up one of the teams which participated in “The Challenge,” an award winning quiz competition in which students from 31 area schools compete. The show is filmed for Cablevision’s Channel 14 – Optimum. The host of the show is Jared Cotter, who also hosts MSG Varsity’s Talent Show and is a semi-finalist from the show American Idol. Students must answer questions on different subjects including history, arts, current events, math, literature, and science.
  • Fitness Center - A new Fitness Center was opened at Peekskill High School and was dedicated to a school attendance officer who recently passed away. Named the Jason Paige Health and Fitness Center, the center features a new ceiling, new floors, and new equipment. Much of the funding for the Fitness Center came from area donations including a donation from Kevin Grehan, who made the donation in memory of his parents who both attended Peekskill High School.
  • Community Service - Part of the learning program within the Peekskill school district is to teach students to be involved with their community and to volunteer their help. In that spirit of a caring community, students recently participated in a variety of activities including writing letters to United States soldiers deployed overseas, at the holidays students at Hillcrest Elementary had a ‘Giving Tree’ which helped distribute toys to needy children, while students at Peekskill Middle School participated in the Annual Toys for Tots drive.

Chalk Talk: PEEP and the Big Wide World

PEEP and the Big Wide World is a website for children which is funded by the National Science Foundation and Northrup Grumman and is produced by WGBH Boston, and TVOntario. The site provides online games for kids all starring Peep and his friends. It is a great website to introduce science subjects to children age 3-5. Kids will find pages to color, science and math games and activities, and even basic physics to learn. From the neighborhood safari activity, to the house hunt match animal to home game, there are lots of fun activities for kids and parents to enjoy.
