Penticton District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Penticton schools use the curriculum developed by the Ministry of Education which specifies what students should know and be able to do as an outcome of their subject-area learning. These standards are referred to as Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLOs) and are the basis for becoming proficient in the subject. For specialized course offerings, the curriculum also provides targets that are measurable and ensures that students will be prepared for their academic and career plans. Aside from providing opportunities for academic growth, the districts focus on building personal skills and character traits such as integrity, honesty, and respect for diversity.

We currently cover the following Penticton-area school district: School District 67, Catholic Independent Schools Nelson Diocese.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Penticton District Curriculum

The math curriculum increases in complexity as students move from elementary to middle school, but students take the basics learnt in the early years forward. In middle school, students add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers using the standard algorithm, and explore the concepts of the greatest common factor and the least common multiple. Students are also introduced to the positive and negative number system, and learn how to locate integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical diagram.

In science, students learn about earth sciences, chemistry, physics, biology and topics covering environmental science. High school courses specializing in each topic allow students to go in-depth; for instance, waves are studied, including the properties of refraction, diffraction, absorption, reflection, and superposition. Students learn the difference between S and P waves, and learn how their velocities and refraction vary. Students also examine electricity to gain a better understanding of the concepts of current, voltage, and movement of electrons. Through these studies, they begin to understand the natural forces harnessed in many innovations.

Chalk Talk: Teaching Children How to Handle Mistakes

So much of a student’s future depends upon success. Students must pass certain tests to advance to subsequent grades or to graduate high school. These tests are not objectively assessed; they do not allow open-ended responses. A few wrong answers could mean failure, and failure could have repercussions for students, teachers, and schools. Today’s pupil also strives for excellence in everything, building an exemplary resume for college applications. Students increasingly feel the need to be perfect, and as a side effect, they stop taking chances. Unfortunately, failure is one life lesson worth learning. Many great scientific discoveries have come from mistakes: Post-it notes, penicillin, and x-rays, to name a few. Without taking risks, many mathematical theorems would be non-existent, books would not be written, and art would not be created. People also need to make mistakes to learn about the world and themselves. Along with failures come insight, courage, and beneficial coping skills.
