Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pepperell District Curriculum
At Pepperell’s Nissitissit Middle School, fifth and sixth grade students study various genres and the elements of literature and read short stories, poetry, and nonfiction. Seventh graders become more independent, active readers through reading several classic and contemporary novels and are exposed to various genres of writing, including narratives, creative writing, and literary analysis. In fifth grade math, students learn various concepts in the areas of operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, fractions, measurement and data, and geometry.
In sixth grade, students become exposed to ratios and proportions, expressions and equations, and statistics and probability. These concepts are all enhanced in seventh and eighth grade, with eighth graders beginning to look at functions. To help students with their math work, the school posts complete curricula, grade-by-grade reference sheets, tips to helping a child succeed in math, and steps to solving word problems. The school also posts grade-by-grade curricular information for social studies and science as well as guides for the special content areas.
