Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Perinton District Curriculum

The standards help ensure that every student will graduate from high school ready for success in college and/or career ready and clearly define student expectations at each grade level. Reading for information is extremely critical part of the new English/Language Arts standards as student’s progress from grade to grade. Reading more complex text is one of the key differences between the previous and revised standards. Writing standards teach students the skills necessary for persuasive and informative writing. The Speaking and Listening Standards require students to develop a broad range of oral communication.

The revised Math standards provide in-depth focus of fewer topics. Teachers in elementary school will provide instruction that helps students gain a real understanding of numbers through principles, content and hands-on learning experiences. This strong foundation will help students apply that comprehension to real world situations in middle and high school.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Physical Education

The problem of childhood obesity has been causing major concern to parents, educators, politicians and health care providers over the past decade. According to the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) most schools in the United States offer physical education to students. Physical Education offers children many benefits including improved strength, flexibility and endurance. Physical activity is also proven to reduce stress, strengthen peer relationships and improve self- confidence. The benefits of physical education can also be traced to improved student achievement in reading and math. According to Charlene Brugenson, Executive Director of NASPE “When kids get moving, and they have their blood pumping, and have different body chemicals that are released it helps increase alertness and mental capacity.”
