Chalk Talk: Humorous Children’s Books

Give these books to children to give them a laugh. “Laura Numeroff’s 10-Step Guide to Living with Your Monster”, written by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Nate Evans, tells readers how to buy their monster, take him to the vet, name him, feed him, play with him, go places with him, train him, sing with him, groom him, and put him to bed. The book is filled with fun, colorful illustrations. In Mo Willems’s “Pigs Make Me Sneeze!” Gerald the elephant is worried because he believes that he is allergic to his best friend Piggy. He is relieved to learn, when examined by a doctor, that he just has a cold! Another book that tells the hilarious adventures of Piggy and Gerald is entitled “Today I Will Fly.” In this story, Piggy is determined to fly, but Gerald repeatedly tells him that he will not be able to. When Piggy thinks he does fly, Gerald tells him that he jumped—not flew. At the end of the story, Piggy “flies” with the help of a bird.
