Peterborough District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Each of the major academic areas – English, Social Studies, Science and Math – fosters conceptual knowledge and the Ontario Curriculum pinpoints the major concepts that students will understand as a part of their learning in each subject. In each subject, the curriculum design is that student learning builds each year so that by the time students are in secondary school they are prepared to take on advanced courses. The secondary curriculum is designed to allow students two paths for their academic courses: they may take either an Academic or Applied version of the courses preparing them for college and career.
We currently cover the following Peterborough-area school districts: Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Peterborough District Curriculum
The schools in Peterborough follow the Ontario Curriculum. This curriculum was developed to provide a framework for the subject areas and to detail the essential skills and knowledge that students must gain in order to be proficient in the subject. The province-wide math and literacy assessments that students take in elementary, middle and high school are aligned to the learning standards of the Ontario Curriculum.
Each subject is organized so that students develop the unique skills that are a part of Math, or English, or History. The opportunity for project-based learning and independent-inquiry increases as students master each subject, and students become able to plan and design projects that bring together more than one subject which they find interesting. Students who are able to pursue inter-disciplinary work may find an academic advisor that will oversee their project.

Chalk Talk: Early Preparation for College
When thinking about college, it is difficult to know where to begin. Even if a student is not interested in the traditional four-year postgraduate education, it would be helpful for them to consider a two-year course so they can have a better chance of succeeding in the job market. Some high schools offer programs called tech-prep, school-to-career, or similar names which are worthwhile to look into. If a four-year education is the choice, students need to consider taking as many science and mathematics courses that they can. Quite often this is the area that admission offices look at when making decisions. They also consider extracurricular activities, including any volunteering or awards.
