Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Peterborough District Curriculum
The schools in Peterborough follow the Ontario Curriculum. This curriculum was developed to provide a framework for the subject areas and to detail the essential skills and knowledge that students must gain in order to be proficient in the subject. The province-wide math and literacy assessments that students take in elementary, middle and high school are aligned to the learning standards of the Ontario Curriculum.
Each subject is organized so that students develop the unique skills that are a part of Math, or English, or History. The opportunity for project-based learning and independent-inquiry increases as students master each subject, and students become able to plan and design projects that bring together more than one subject which they find interesting. Students who are able to pursue inter-disciplinary work may find an academic advisor that will oversee their project.

SchoolTutoring Academy’s tutoring programs for Peterborough students start with a free academic assessment with an Academic Director. Our flagship tutoring programs are available for $199.99/month which include regular one-on-one tutoring, academic mentorship, bi-monthly progress reports, learning profiles, and parental conference calls.
Peterborough District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Each of the major academic areas – English, Social Studies, Science and Math – fosters conceptual knowledge and the Ontario Curriculum pinpoints the major concepts that students will understand as a part of their learning in each subject. In each subject, the curriculum design is that student learning builds each year so that by the time students are in secondary school they are prepared to take on advanced courses. The secondary curriculum is designed to allow students two paths for their academic courses: they may take either an Academic or Applied version of the courses preparing them for college and career.
We currently cover the following Peterborough-area school districts: Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board.
Keeping Informed: Recent Peterborough Educational News
- International Baccalaureate - Local students now have the opportunity to join in the prestigious International Baccalaureate Program. This program prepares students for the challenges of college by providing an internationally focused, rigorous curriculum. Students graduate from this program with two diplomas - they receive an International Baccalaureate Diploma and an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
- Integrated Arts Program - Students also have the opportunity to take classes in an Integrated Arts Program. This is designed to bring the arts into the classroom for students and allows those enrolled the chance to produce original work of artistic expression as part of their course work. Opportunities to exhibit work frequently occur during the program.
- Strategic Planning - The District has approved a strategic plan after much collaboration amongst stakeholders around the educational community. The overarching theme in this three year period will be "Living in a Changing World" and will focus on belonging and inclusion, healthy living, at-risk supports and student engagement, equitable access, consistency and continuing education, critical thinking, and scientific and technological learning. During the process, the District will be seeking feedback from the community.

My daughter was able to improve her test scores after a few months of tutoring with SchoolTutoring. However, while raising test scores is great, the real payoff is in the self-confidence that she gained.
I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!
We are so happy with the results of your tutoring program and academic support. Homework time was such a stressful evening for the entire evening before we brought your tutors into our home. Thank you for all your help!
Our daughter, a first grader, struggled with basic reading and handwriting. When she began with SchoolTutoring she was almost a year behind her class. Within a year of being enrolled, she is reading above her grade level and has the confidence to match.

Chalk Talk: Early Preparation for College
When thinking about college, it is difficult to know where to begin. Even if a student is not interested in the traditional four-year postgraduate education, it would be helpful for them to consider a two-year course so they can have a better chance of succeeding in the job market. Some high schools offer programs called tech-prep, school-to-career, or similar names which are worthwhile to look into. If a four-year education is the choice, students need to consider taking as many science and mathematics courses that they can. Quite often this is the area that admission offices look at when making decisions. They also consider extracurricular activities, including any volunteering or awards.
