Pickering District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum used by the public schools in Pickering is the Ontario Curriculum. The curriculum is a framework for teaching the skills and knowledge that make up each subject. Additionally, the learning within each subject is tied to the major concepts and higher order thinking skills that students will develop during their course work. The curriculum does not prescribe how a teacher should design their lesson plans, rather it provides all teachers with the targets to meet so that all students are able to become proficient in the subject. It also allows for teachers of different subjects to integrate their lessons to help students see the connections between what they are learning.

We currently cover the following Pickering-area school districts: Durham District School Board and Durham District Catholic School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pickering District Curriculum

The subjects of Math, Science, English, and History are central to the development of conceptual knowledge and advanced methods of thinking. The curriculum in Math is organized to bring about logical and proportional reasoning, the ability to select amongst computational tools, and ways to model mathematic data to make viable predictions. Students are also able to put their math skills to use in their science classes, and in a variety of other ways, to help them see the practical applications of the subject.

In Science, students learn about the processes which scientists use, ways to test hypotheses and theories, and are able to conduct their own scientific experiments. The exposure to process-oriented thinking in Math and Science is useful in many other subjects and on projects that students are required to work on. Students are able to take advanced courses in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics following their early years education.

Chalk Talk: Mentoring

Mentoring is the idea of a shared relationship between a student and an adult. Through mentoring the two share values, passions, traditions and attitudes in order to help enhance each others' lives. Often the mentor can be a kind of role model, support and encourager. Mentors can help students that need academic help as well as those that succeed academically. No matter the economic situation of families involved, self-confidence and aspirations can be built upon even beyond graduation. The benefits that can come from a mentor relationship are more than what are stated. Parents that are interested in finding a mentor for a child should look in the business area that the child is interested in or talk with a guidance counselor for assistance.
