Pine Hill District and Curriculum

Students in the Pine Hill Schools number nearly 2,000 and attend one of the four schools in the district. The Pine Hill Schools collaborate with community stakeholders and parents to create a safe and caring environment in which students can learn. Students engage in lessons that provide them with practical academic knowledge and skills, but which also foster the development of emotional and social skills they need to be successful members of the community. This focus on the whole child allows the district to produce learners who are prepared to enter college, the armed forces or the workforce and be immediately successful.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pine Hill District Curriculum

The curriculum is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. With an emphasis on building a strong foundation of practical skills, these standards outline the knowledge students should acquire at each grade level from kindergarten to the twelfth grade. The standards also provide for the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills.

The world languages standard helps students acquire the skills to read, write, speak and listen in a foreign language. Students first acquire basic language skills, such as identifying and pronouncing common words and phrases. Once students have that foundation in place, they move on to acquire conversational skills, in which they are able to speak and understand basic spoken and written phrases. As students progress, they acquire a deeper understanding of vocabulary and grammar, and begin to read and write more complex passages. Once students are in high school, they begin to engage in lengthy conversations in the language under study, using proper cadence, inflection and tone to convey meaning.

Chalk Talk: Reasons to Volunteer

Volunteerism is a great way for kids to learn about community and build connections with others. By fostering a sense of involvement, children gain an understanding of how they can positively impact the lives of their friends and neighbors, as well as motivate them to become more involved in community events. This civic responsibility is something that can last a lifetime. Volunteerism has been shown to reduce stress, increase feelings of self-worth and improve self-esteem as well. Additionally, kids acquire practical skills that allow them to manage their time effectively, set goals and work well with others. And regardless of the type of volunteer activity, kids gain valuable on-the-job skills that can help them gain employment down the road. Volunteering not only helps the community in the short term, it also provides volunteers with long-lasting positive effects.
