Pismo Beach District and Curriculum
The teaching and learning in the Pismo Beach schools is guided by a curriculum which is laid out by subject and grade-level. The framework for each subject contains the skill sets, thinking strategies, concepts relevant to the subject, as well as guiding principles for instruction. When students take assessments in the classroom or at the end of the year, they measure proficiency on each of the standards that students are expected to learn in their grade.
Language Arts is designed to give students all the communication and critical thinking skills they will need for all subjects. Discussion about books and events, and the opportunity to give oral presentations, are used to develop listening and speaking skills. Research is also a component of the curriculum and calls upon students to use the reading strategies they have learned.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pismo Beach District Curriculum
Math is organized to teach problem-solving skills in the different areas of math like measurement, data analysis using charts, graphs and other visual media, algebraic operations, and geometry. Early courses are more broad and give an overview of all these topics and in high school these classes become more specific, so students will be taking a full year of Geometry or Algebra and going deeper into the subject.
Science is laid out to teach the content in the areas of Biology and Life Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science. Students delve deeper into the topics within each field with many opportunities to investigate and experiment in lab settings. Technology is also a main feature of the entire experience and students are able to use technology to learn and to create. With the range of skills and the ability to communicate ideas, students also have what it needs to become innovative thinkers.
