Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pomfret District Curriculum
The initial literacy skills that students develop include reading closely, comprehending a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, critical thinking, and communicating verbally and in writing. The curriculum for middle and high school students builds upon what was taught in elementary school. Students will apply the same reading skills and strategies to more complex texts in which analysis will play a much bigger role.
Instruction in math classes is based on standards that require students to develop fundamental mathematics skills that they can use to solve both classroom and real world problems. These skills include numeracy and operational sense, spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, and problem modeling. Mathematics will begin to be separated into subsets of the subjects instead of broad courses that cover many topics. Students will take classes such as Statistics, Calculus, and Algebra which will require strong number sense skills and the ability to complete multi-step problems.

Chalk Talk: The Joy of Learning
Doubtlessly, when you were a kid you watched, read, and heard things that you did not understand until you had that “So, that’s what was going on!” moment years later. Part of the reason you are able to have those moments today is because you grew up in a time in which kids did not have access to a constant stream of TV shows, books, and music that were created specifically for them. That is not so today. Today’s kids have unfettered access to shows, books, and music that speak to them on their levels. These things don’t really challenge kids. That’s why parents and teachers need to make sure that kids take time to consume media content that is above their level. They need to let children read books that challenge their reading skills and their view of the world. They need to play children songs that have complicated, rich, and interesting melodies and lyrics.
