Pompano Beach District and Curriculum
One can easily understand the curriculum of Broward County Public Schools by thinking of a spiral. At the center of the spiral are the most basic academic skills that a student needs to learn. The outer layers of the spiral contain more advanced concepts. As the student progresses through the spiral, he or she continues to revisit the basic concepts while adding new layers of skills each year. The K-12 math curriculum is based upon the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. According to these standards, students should establish a firm foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, negative numbers, and geometry in K-5th grade. In middle school, students focus on algebra and prepare for the more advanced math they will encounter in high school. High school mathematics teach students to not only solve problems but how to apply mathematic principles to problems they will encounter in the real world. High school is also the time to prepare for college and career mathematics.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pompano District Curriculum
Great emphasis is placed on Reading and Language Arts as it supports learning in other areas. In grades K-5, students are taught how to read a text and extract meaning out of it. They also hone their abilities to write persuasive, narrative, and informational pieces. Students that are not reading at grade level by the time they are in grades 6-12 are given the opportunity to close gaps by a range of interventions. Students in the upper grades continue to learn how to produce an assortment of written work.

Chalk Talk: Keeping Your Student Healthy
Everyone wants their students to be healthy, and keeping them healthy helps them to succeed in school. Getting enough sleep is the first thing you can do. Be sure to set a regular bedtime on school nights and stick to it. Pack healthy lunches; if your student eats lunches provided by the school, be sure he or she understands how to select nutritious foods. Teach your child how to properly wash his or her hands and remind them to do so. If your child is showing signs of illness, keep them home so that they do not become sick. Also, be sure that he or she is fully recovered before returning to class so that there is not a rebound illness. Finally, provide time every day for your student to get some exercise.
