Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Poquoson District Curriculum
Language Arts, at Poquoson City Public Schools, begins with the students learning the value of letter recognition. This skill is used throughout their education. In first and second grade each student extends their skills through the Language Arts Extension Center. This center uses a theme-based outlook to help children become better students in this area while learning about animal classification, author studies, reptiles and other topics.
Students at Poquoson City Public Schools begin learning Mathematics by associating numbers with objects. They are then able to use this to learn how to take two sets of objects and add or subtract them from each other. They soon learn the other functions of numbers such as multiplying, or in algebraic equations. In high school they have the option of extending their foundation of learning as they take geometry, algebra, or calculus, allowing them to become real problem-solvers.

Chalk Talk: What to Expect in Sixth-Grade Social Studies
Each year in Social Studies bring new skills and new topics for students to learn. Each state has their own educational guidelines to follow, but there are some standard ideas that are covered in all curricula. First, most states cover Ancient Civilizations in the sixth grade. This takes the children to the beginnings of all civilization, including the geography, climate and landmarks of each area. This area of education helps build students thinking skills, such as linking, sequencing or interpreting events. Students also begin to learn study skills in the sixth grade which can help them to succeed well past graduation. This skill needs developing as most students do not come by this naturally. If a child asks for assistance, step in gladly and show support. This will allow them to feel free to come and ask for help as they go through the next several years.
