Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Port Arthur District Curriculum
Social Studies, at Port Arthur Schools, shows young students the adults that are helpers in their classroom, school, and community. Students take field trips to fire stations and to the principal’s office, so they can become familiar this these people. Within a couple of year, these students learn about the people that make up their community’s and state’s government and the history that went into the makeup of these groups. This concept is then expanded upon as they then learn about the history of the United States and this government as well as the government types that make up other countries.
Geology is a part of each student’s education at Port Arthur from the early years. They may not necessarily know it in this way, but whenever the child explores with dirt and water, or other forces, they are taking a part in this science. This education continues on as children learn how various rocks are formed or make up the layers of soil in the earth. They also learn about pressure and temperature and how these take a part in studying this topic.

First grade children have already had the basics of reading introduced to them, but in this year they learn skills that help them with decoding words and comprehending what they are reading. Curriculum varies from state to state, but generally, students will leave first grade with advancement in several areas. These include learning to use illustrations and other text features to help with comprehension. They also begin to understand how speech and sounds connect as well as learning how to extend a story, using descriptive words, or extension of ideas. First grade students also learn about the motives of a character and author’s meaning. The first grade reader is well on their path to a life-long adventure in learning.
