Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Port Coquitlam District Curriculum

The math curriculum begins by introducing students to the range of problem-solving techniques used in the different areas of math. In high school, algebra, geometry, and data analysis are emphasized and connected to practical and academic knowledge. Students learn to create equations as well, including those that describe relationships and numbers. Algebra students also gain the ability to reason with equations and inequalities. Students develop the skills to solve systems of equations as well as solve inequalities graphically.

The city has a strong belief in physical fitness and has constructed an outdoor gym which everyone can use. Baseball fields, soccer pitches, ice hockey rinks, golf courses, hockey rinks and extreme sport venues are readily available. Students also gain competency in the area of injury prevention, learning how stretching, protective equipment, and awareness of others can help prevent injury.

Chalk Talk: How the International Baccalaureate Program Is Unique

The International Baccalaureate Program offers high school students a less traditional but still academically rigorous education. It is organized differently than the traditional high school curriculum, and students must complete a certain number of specified credit requirements to fulfill an International Baccalaureate Diploma. Students are required to take courses in English Literature, a foreign language (French, Spanish, Japanese or Mandarin), courses on Individuals and Societies comprising economics, geography or history, at least one Math course, and an experimental science course covering biology, chemistry or physics. Students must also take a Theory of Knowledge course to receive an IB Diploma and there are also electives in fine arts and film. Over the years, this curricular program has become very popular with students planning on attending college.
