Port Hope District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools of Port Hope use the Ontario Curriculum as the guideline for teaching and learning. This curriculum is centered on core academic subjects like English, Math and Science, and have developed frameworks that guide student learning from kindergarten through graduation. The frameworks specify the grade-level objectives for content learning, the broad critical thinking skills, and the goals for assessing student proficiency and achievement in each subject. The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is aligned to the expectations set out in the curriculum.

We currently cover the following Port Hope-area school districts: Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Port Hope District Curriculum

In Math, the curriculum lays out a progression of learning in areas like numerical operations, patterns, measurement and spatial sense, and literacy in reading quantitative data. Students become able to handle the work of algebra, geometry, statistics and other areas of advanced math as an outcome of learning in their elementary years. In Science, content is taught in life science, earth and space science, mechanisms and structures and the processes of scientific inquiry are also focused upon.

Literacy skills are strongly emphasized across the curriculum. The English curricular framework elaborates literacy development using both fiction and non-fiction, the recognition of point of view and ability to increase cultural awareness that is gained through reading. In writing, students learn mechanics and how to apply their voice to different types of writing. Throughout all subjects, both media and technology have become increasingly focused on as their use is common and the goal of the curriculum is to prepare students for academic and career pursuits.

Chalk Talk: What Areas of Study Are Suited to Independent Studies?

Many areas of academics are well-suited to become Independent Studies. The role of an Independent Study is to give students a chance to pursue an academic area that they are particularly interested in under the guidance of an educator who can provide an advisory role. Independent studies are a good way to bring together more than one subject for an interdisciplinary exploration of a topic. For instance, a student studying issues relating to a Census will draw upon politics and math, creating a piece of scholarship that is original and independently derived. The opportunity to work on an Independent Study is also valuable for the project and time management lessons which students learn working on projects.
