Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Port Moody District Curriculum

All students are expected to achieve the goals set out in the curriculum, but they are also offered different opportunities to customize their learning experience. The middle school has a focus on the Arts and French Immersion. Youngsters seeking an alternate plan attend the complex in nearby Port Coquitlam. Students often attend the high school from other areas as it offers the International Baccalaureate Program. This intense course of study takes two years and is open to children age 16-19 years. Completion of the program, with suitable grades, gives the graduate an IB Diploma which is well-regarded at a worldwide assortment of universities and colleges.

Health and wellness are also focuses of learning, and topics like nutrition, exercise, and mental well-being are all discussed in health and physical education courses. Students also learn how to work as part of a team and develop improved communication skills as well. In high school, students learn about wellness, including proper nutrition and the value of getting regular exercise.

As students find areas of particular interest, and hone their knowledge and skills in advance of post-secondary life, they are also expected to participate in community service and outreach.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Applying to College

One of the most important things you can do to make your application stand out is demonstrate interest in the college, and show good cause for your interest. What this means, is do tangible things that catch the attention of the committee and show that you are interested in attending this college. A campus visit is one of the main things you can do. Be sure to send a thank you note afterwards. Interviews are also a great way to show how enthusiastic you are about this college. Again, drop a line afterwards to thank the interviewer. The application itself demonstrates interest, especially if it has restrictions such as being early. Your essays might also show how much you are interested in this college and will give you a chance to explain how you see yourself fitting in and what you appreciate about the institutions offerings.
