Chalk Talk: What Does it Mean to Read Critically?
To read critically basically means to think about what you are reading. Think about what the author is trying to say, how the information fits with what you already know, and about what else you would like to learn. Think about how a piece is written and what kind of language is used. Think about whether the information is valid. Ask yourself if this piece of writing is worth reading. Critical reading goes beyond what the words actually say. It requires the reader to answer all who, what, when, where, why, and how questions. Learning to read critically enables students to become independent learners.
