Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Port Orange District Curriculum

In elementary school, the Common Core State Standards require that students learn how to sound out words, how to derive the meanings of words, how to understand what they are reading, and how to communicate with others through writing and speaking. In addition, students are allowed to take classes in speech and debate or creative writing. In high school, students can branch into other fields by taking classes in composition, semantics and logic, contemporary and classical literature, and journalism.

Elementary school is the time for students to lay a good foundation in math by studying numerical operations, shapes, time, measurement, and graphs. Middle school students must learn problem-solving, graphing, data analysis, probability, ratio/proportion, geometry, expressions, and equations. High school mathematics students may choose from algebra, geometry, analysis of functions, probability and statistics, pre-calculus, and calculus.

Chalk Talk: What Does it Mean to Read Critically?

To read critically basically means to think about what you are reading. Think about what the author is trying to say, how the information fits with what you already know, and about what else you would like to learn. Think about how a piece is written and what kind of language is used. Think about whether the information is valid. Ask yourself if this piece of writing is worth reading. Critical reading goes beyond what the words actually say. It requires the reader to answer all who, what, when, where, why, and how questions. Learning to read critically enables students to become independent learners.
