Chalk Talk: Gap Year Programs

A Gap Year occurs when a student defers college attendance, sometimes for a term, sometimes for an entire year. Many students are accepted to college and then defer, some simply wait to apply. Not every college allows students to defer, though if the student has a well-planned gap program in place, most colleges are supportive. Students pursue gap years because they feel that they aren’t ready to attend college yet. This might mean that they need coursework in a particular area or need to work and save up money to pay for college, or it might mean that they lack the emotional maturity to succeed in college. Gap years might involve volunteering and community service, work and internships, study and study abroad, or, in many cases, a combination of all of these.
