  • Village Green Environmental Studies School (K-5) - Village Green Elementary School has developed an after school magnet program so that students can work through projects that expand their horizons. The activities are meant to serve many goals besides academic purposes and a major approach to student learning is to create imaginative and original lessons and projects. These provide for the goals of raising cultural awareness, social skills and physical development as well as academics.
  • Lincoln Park Academy - Lincoln Park Academy is a college preparatory middle/high school for 6th through 12th grades. It offers students preparation for placement after high school with work that is engaging and challenging. Magnet teachers collaborate as a community to create original and innovative lessons for their students. Students are expected to become proficient in core academics and other chosen elective subjects. Cooperation is encouraged between the community and parents so to allow students to develop, independence, and character development.
  • College Preparatory Academy of the Treasure Coast - At Somerset High School the College Preparatory Academy of the Treasure Coast offers academic excellence to students attending this program. The magnet plan enhances student learning through technology, information, and communication. Learning also takes place outside school with the sharing of community resources. All students are offered classes tailored to their personal needs and interests. Teachers and students also collaborate with local industries and organizations to provide relevancy about real-world applications.

Chalk Talk: Gap Year Programs

A Gap Year occurs when a student defers college attendance, sometimes for a term, sometimes for an entire year. Many students are accepted to college and then defer, some simply wait to apply. Not every college allows students to defer, though if the student has a well-planned gap program in place, most colleges are supportive. Students pursue gap years because they feel that they aren’t ready to attend college yet. This might mean that they need coursework in a particular area or need to work and save up money to pay for college, or it might mean that they lack the emotional maturity to succeed in college. Gap years might involve volunteering and community service, work and internships, study and study abroad, or, in many cases, a combination of all of these.
