Chalk Talk: Benefits of Small Classes

Much research has been done on how schools can help students improve their achievement levels. While parental involvement is the single largest factor in student success, the number of children in a class is a significant factor as well. Studies show that students in the early elementary grades who are members of smaller classes demonstrate marked improvements on various measures of academic success. Standardized test scores are higher, class grades are improved, and attendance is better as well. The social benefits are also significant in that students in small classes are able to form stronger bonds with their peers. These academic and attendance gains are particularly evident in minority student populations. What’s more, the early gains that students in small classes experience last throughout their educational career.
