Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Portage la Prairie District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum combines many literacy skills from reading and writing, to listening, speaking and presenting. Evaluating the effectiveness of a speaker’s point-of-view is practiced as well, with students analyzing and critiquing the speaker’s delivery of ideas and the support he or she uses to back up their claims. Students also work with various digital medias in order to create a dynamic presentation.

The Science curriculum introduces students to topics in different areas of science such as biology, chemistry, physics, earth and environmental science, and technology and engineering. An examination of the earth’s resources is also undertaken. Students look at renewable sources of energy and compare their benefits and detriments to those of nonrenewable resources. Different forms of energy are studied as well, including the concepts of gravitational potential energy, nuclear energy, and conservation of energy.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of a Small College

Small colleges have many things to offer students that might not be found at larger universities. For example, students are more likely to have smaller class sizes, which means they can form relationships with professors and get help and advice more easily. These relationships might lead to opportunities, such as internships. Smaller colleges tend to have loyal donors and alumni who stay involved with their alma maters because of that close experience. These alumni might offer internships and opportunities. Because of the atmosphere at many of these schools, good teachers are drawn because they want to actually be able to teach their students. Often, these colleges carry a lot of name recognition, which can be of great benefit to graduates.
