Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Portage District Curriculum

Students in the Portage Public Schools system take part in the John Collins Writing Program starting in elementary school. This program focuses on types of writing and taking those writings and applying them across the curriculum. This writing program is used exclusively through middle school and helps students develop the skills necessary to be an independent writer. During this time, students are also developing comprehension strategies for different types of fiction and non-fiction they encounter, and are encouraged to develop independence in choosing reading selections and maintaining reading journals.

International Baccalaureate, or IB, classes are another offering of the Portage Public Schools. Over half of the school system’s juniors and seniors choose to take these classes to earn college credit while still in high school. Some students elect to join the more challenging IB Diploma program culminating in a written essay at the end of their senior year.

Chalk Talk: Why Summer School Is a Thing of the Past

Once upon a time, students anxiously awaited their end of year grades to see if they had to attend summer school. However, in recent years school divisions across the country have done away with summer school and instituted more tutoring. Looking at this trend, one may ask why would schools do away with what was once a school tradition? When looking at data, it became clear that summer school had little to no effect on most students. The same students were showing up in summer school year after year. Shouldn’t summer school have remediated these students so that they would not return? The problem with summer school was that it was simply extra school days for students who were not doing well. Once educational professionals started to dig deeper, they understood that these children did not need more of the same traditional teaching methods. What they needed was to be taught in a manner that matched with their own personal learning style.
