Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Portales District Curriculum
Students in the public schools in Portales, New Mexico follow the state mandated Common Core Curriculum Framework which emphasizes fluency in both Mathematics and English and Language Arts (ELA). Students must also pass required reading and mathematics proficiency exams for graduation. In English and Language Arts (ELA) students are expected to learn reading, writing, speaking and listening in correct English. Teachers provide reading material including both literature and informational reading in an effort to make students familiar with the type of reading they may encounter.
In Mathematics, students focus on the mastery of core mathematical subjects including computation, algebra, geometry, statistics, measurement and probability. The curriculum is progressive with students building on the skills they have learned the previous year. The goal is for students to be critically literate in both Mathematics and English when they complete high school.
SchoolTutoring Academy’s tutoring programs for Portales students start with a free academic assessment with an Academic Director. Our flagship tutoring programs are available for $199.99/month which include regular one-on-one tutoring, academic mentorship, bi-monthly progress reports, learning profiles, and parental conference calls.

Chalk Talk: Miami’s Children’s Museum
You may not be able to visit the Miami’s Children’s Museum in person, but there is plenty for children to do at their website. Kids can take a virtual tour of the museum and the exhibits, play a fishy quiz, answer questions for a museum trivia game, play I spy in the Galleries, download designs to color or new wallpaper for the computer. While on the virtual tour be sure to check out the Castle of Dreams, a two story sand castle with sands from all over the world, or the six foot piggy bank, the safety zone to learn about what firefighters and emergency personnel do, and the Ocean Odyssey, a 900 gallon aquarium with all kinds of marine life to look at.
