Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pottsville District Curriculum
All subjects follow frameworks that describe the grade-level expectations which students should meet. For example, primary-level students in reading develop fluency by applying decoding and sight vocabulary. This helps them more easily read for meaning. By fifth grade, students are able to use technology easily to enhance basic skills in reading, writing, and math. They continue throughout middle and high school building upon their knowledge base which enables the development of critical and analytic thinking skills.
High school programs that are offered include a college prep program with three years of science, a business program, and a career/technology program. All students have the opportunity to take electives that include the arts, foreign languages, athletics, and music or they may choose to pursue an Independent Study. Students in any program can use the computer in writing and learn more about specific software, such as Microsoft Office.

Chalk Talk: Learning a Foreign Language
Many schools offer foreign language study, and at least 2 years of a foreign language are required for college entrance requirements. The study of a foreign language is helpful for learning more about the culture in the countries where that language is spoken, and in addition, teaches discipline and insight into one's own native language. Finally, learning another language can be fun.
