Chalk Talk: The Impact of Reading to Young Children

We all know that it is important for our children to read books beginning at an early age. But studies have shown that is also important for young children to be read to... starting at an early age, and the earlier the better. From age two to five, children's brains are developing rapidly. During this time, children are very curious and want to experience the world around them. When we read to young children, we help them experience the world and help them in a great many ways. First, reading allows the parent or caregiver the opportunity to make a connection with the child. By reading to a young child, it helps establish basic language skills, develops logical thinking and concentration, helps with behavior and discipline, and promotes the idea that reading is fun. The impact of reading to a young child is twofold: it prepares a child for his own reading and comprehension, all of which builds the foundation for academic success.
