Presque Isle District and Curriculum

Schools in Aroostook County ensure that their school curriculum is carefully aligned with the common core standards set forth by the state of Maine. The goal is to provide all of Maine’s students with an education that will prepare them for success in college and their chosen careers. This curriculum is also designed to provide your child with the literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills that will be built upon and used for the entire school experience.

We currently cover the following Presque Isle-area school district: Maine School Administrative District No. 1.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Presque Isle District Curriculum

A basic foundation of literacy skills is laid in kindergarten where students learn letters and their sounds. By the time students enter first grade they will be able to write their names. In first grade teachers will help students to build upon their skills and to begin the teaching of fundamental reading and comprehension skills. By the time students reach high school skills are developed to the point that students read and analyze text in fiction and nonfiction and they write several types of papers, such as informative and persuasive writing.

As with Language Arts/Literature, students receive the foundation for math skills in kindergarten. Students learn to recognize and write numbers, as well as how to add and subtract numbers using objects, which gives students their basic algebra skills. Students learn basic geometry skills by grouping blocks of different shapes, like rectangles, triangles and circles, into the right groups. Along with math, the STEM program gives students skills in science, technology and engineering.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Open Communication

Parents often wonder how they can help their schools and teachers provide their children with a good education. Teachers and schools need the help of parents so that they can provide the best possible education for students. You can help by talking to teachers and administrators to find out where they are lacking. Communication is the key to staying involved with your child's education. If you communicate with your child's teacher on a frequent basis and show your child that you are invested in his education. By taking these actions you will not only help your child, but you will also help his teacher and the school. When teachers ask for help be responsive and give whatever help you possibly can. You can volunteer to help individual students or read to the class. Maybe you can go as a chaperone on a field trip. A trip to the zoo with kindergarteners is a blast. Get busy, stay involved, keep communication open, and your child and school will succeed.
