Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Prichard District Curriculum

Mobile County Schools is comprised of five districts with 53 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, and 17 high schools.
The school system of Mobile County follows the rigor of the Alabama State Standards in all subject areas, including the
core areas of mathematics, language arts, social studies, and science courses. Mobile County Schools also have a wide
selection of supplementary electives for the students to choose from.

Seven of the schools within Mobile County School System are magnet schools, which are schools that specialize in a variety
of distinctive academic programs that are on an advanced level. These specialized magnet schools allow for the admittance
of all children that qualify, regardless of the public school zone.

Keeping Informed: Recent Prichard Educational News

  • Presidential Award Winner - Meadowlake Elementary School teacher Mrs. J. Ellzey has been given the Excellence in Math and Science Teaching by the 2012 Presidential Awards. This is one of the highest awards that can be achieved by a teacher. Mrs. Ellzey has been honored for her superior subject knowledge, distinction in her instructional practices and will be consulted on matters of Science and Math education policy.
  • Yellowstone National Park Field Trip - Fonde Elementary School's students in the fourth grade took a field trip to Yellowstone National Park right from their classroom. This virtual field trip was given to the students by a Yellowstone Park Ranger, who hosted a full tour and answered questions from the students about its history, geography and many other points of interest.
  • Dauphin Island Sea Lab - Each summer, the summer enrichment camps offer the students a rich educational experience in oceanography by taking them to the ocean without them having to drive to the beach. Students of a variety of ages, mostly ages 5 and older, can attend the camp and choose from a list of classes such as: Treasure Hunters, Oceans Alive, Art-Sea Discovery, and many more.

Chalk Talk: What Are the Magnet Schools of Mobile County?

Council Traditional is a core curriculum magnet school for students in K-5, and Phillips Preparatory is a post-secondary preparation school for the middle grades. Old Shell (K-4) Road and Dunbar (5-8) are both Performing Arts schools. Mathematics and Science magnet schools are Chickasaw (K-5) and Clark-Shaw Magnet (6-8). There are Magnet Schools for high school students that have an interest in Law or Medicine and may benefit from the curriculum at LeFlore Magnet School.
