Chalk Talk: Early Childhood Screening

The early childhood years, which are from birth to the beginning of kindergarten, is an important time of rapid learning and growth. In order to enroll in Minnesota’s public schools, parents are required that their child go through Early Childhood Screening or a comparable screening by a non-school provider. If a child is entering kindergarten, proof of a screening must be rendered within 30 days of entering school. Screening is a quick and non-invasive procedure which helps identify health or development programs in infants and young children. The screening supports children’s readiness for school and helps promote positive health and developmental outcomes. Many programs can benefit from a family questionnaire to evaluate the effectiveness of the screening. Students in need of a health assessment, diagnostic assessment or educational evaluation will be identified by the screening results.
