Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Providence District Curriculum

In Language Arts, students are asked to read both informational and literary texts, which means that, by the time they have to start reading a variety of texts to learn about science or social studies, they will be experienced in learning information via text. In Math, it means that the fundamental principles of algebra, geometry, and statistics are introduced in elementary school math, and the connections between them are emphasized.

In high school, students select courses based on their career and educational goals. For students with interests in career areas such as engineering, business, agriculture, and other areas, the district offers the “Pathways” plans, which help students to choose courses that will best prepare them for their careers. College-bound students are encouraged to take a rigorous schedule, including foreign languages and additional math, science, and social studies courses.

Chalk Talk: Testing and Tutoring

Your student will be taking a variety of tests over the course of their school career, ranging from ordinary in-class assessments to statewide evaluations to college-entrance tests like the ACT or SAT. The goals of these forms of testing are to make sure that students are mastering the material being covered in classes, and that they have learned the skills necessary for future success. If your child is struggling with testing, remember that there are two facets to testing: knowing the material, and being prepared for the specific test structure. A tutor can help your child work on both, by understanding the subject area being tested, and by helping them learn how to approach a test in a given format.
