Provo District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Like all school districts in Utah, the Provo City School District follows the Utah Core Standards for academic achievement, a statewide system for assuring the excellence of public education for all students, and preparing them for the job market and for college academics. The Provo City School District offers a variety of resources to teachers to support their work in the classroom, including a wide variety of standards documents, common curricular materials, and continuing education programs. Because of this support, the Provo City School District has excellent scores on the Adequate Yearly Progress reports at all grade levels.

We currently cover the following Provo-area school district: Provo City School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Provo District Curriculum

The program begins in kindergarten, and progresses organically through the grade levels to ensure that students have the skills necessary to succeed at the next level. Language Arts programs focus on reading both literary and informational texts, and being able to critically think about them, in addition to being able to write well. Math standards require that students be able to think critically and use math in multiple circumstances. Provo schools offer immersion programs in Chinese, Portuguese, French, and Spanish beginning in first grade.

Both high schools in Provo offer excellent options for all students, including Advanced Placement courses and the International Baccalaureate World School, the only one of its kind in Utah County. Students are introduced to global issues, discover skills for pursuing research and create their own products of learning. Students choose their electives based on their career and educational goals, and both high schools have systems to support students in their choices.

Chalk Talk: Why Do Advanced Students Need Tutoring?

Even the best students can benefit from tutoring. The one-on-one experience of working with a tutor allows students to develop their own capabilities as strongly as possible through individual attention and reinforcement. At the same time, any minor gaps (which might not be caught in a large classroom) can be identified and filled in as early as possible, making sure that future learning rests on a solid foundation. Tutoring can also allow the academically advanced student to remain academically engaged and move into areas that they otherwise might not have covered. Tutoring can be a way to make sure that a gifted student remains engaged in the learning process and reaches their full potential.
