Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pryor District Curriculum
In Mathematics, the instructors begin to teach number sense in the early grades. In early elementary, the strands of number sense include developing and applying the concepts of addition and subtraction. For this, models are used to build addition and subtraction problems to the number sum of twenty. The teacher in the early mathematics classroom shows the students how to solve addition and subtraction problems by putting sets of objects together (or pulling them apart for subtraction), showing the learners how the problem makes sense.
In English Language Arts, the students are taught how to successfully seek and find information in text. Specific information within text can be found, in addition to reading the text, by reading the subheadings, the captions, looking at charts, pictures, graphs and other supportive elements of the text. The instructor allows the children to practice looking for specific information by asking open-ended questions so they must answer the questions with more than one word.
