Nearly 100 students arrived for their first meeting where their coach explained how important it is to have fun through physical activity. Their first run was a quarter mile course around the track, where each student collected a popsicle stick at the completion of each lap. The sticks can be turned in to the coach at the end of practice for tokens which can be added to a running club necklace. The coach hopes that the tokens will help motivate the students to run and stay physically active.

Chalk Talk: The Necessity of Physical Education at all Grade Levels
With the rapid progress of computers, cell phones, electronic games and hand-held devices, our children have become less active. Because they are less active and getting less exercise, our children weigh more and have less energy. However, good eating habits, physical activity and exercise are keys to good health, all of which can be taught in Physical Education Classes. Children need to learn how important it is to be active, how to eat correctly, and how to be healthy through adulthood. Unfortunately, many schools in the country are losing funding and oftentimes, special classes such as PE and arts are the first to be cut. However, studies have shown children are more focused more cooperative and perform better academically when there are hours during the week for physical activity, supporting the idea that Physical Education Class is a necessary part of a child’s curriculum in all grade levels.
