Chalk Talk: How Does Behaviorism Effect Cognitive Learning?

Behaviorism underpins cognitive learning in many ways. For example, behaviorist techniques, such as positive and negative reinforcement, can be used to teach students certain skills or routines in the classroom, just as they can be used to encourage students to practice. Via extensive practice, from a cognitivist perspective, skills become automatized and eventually stored in long term memory (via routine). New memories serve to expand the foundation upon which information can be stored and also create additional potential connections to incorporate future information. Thus, teachers can use behaviorist techniques to assist students in their cognitive development. By using such techniques, teachers are able to elicit behaviors that assist students, because of their cognitive impact, to learn more effectively with ease. This is largely because behaviorism is an essential factor in motivating students to repeat a target activity again and again and, in that way, practice as necessary.
