Randolph Public Schools have implemented the Common Core State Standards—a combination of the new nationwide standards, the 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, and standards from schools around the globe.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Randolph District Curriculum

The standards were created using a “backwards” method; educational experts first asked employers what it takes for young people to succeed in college and the workforce and subsequently developed standards that would adequately prepare students. After picking out the best standards from around the world—with the main goal being for students to be college- and career-ready upon graduating from high school—the educational experts asked for feedback and received an overwhelming 10,000 responses; after that, the Common Core State Standards were born.

For example, English Language Arts skills consist of increasing reading fluency, comprehension, and grammar usage. Students use their knowledge of prefixes and suffixes to understand what new words mean. They learn to use reference books such as a dictionary, thesaurus or textbook glossary. This gives them the independence to learn on their own and the frame of reference to evaluate different texts which they encounter.

Chalk Talk: Parts of a Lesson Plan

In their education programs, teaching candidates learn how to write extensive, detailed lesson plans. Lesson plan formats can vary but often contain many similar parts. Lesson plans must show how instruction aligns to the curriculum and, thus, needs to include the related standards from the state and/or Common Core. To spell out the exact expectations of students, teachers have to write measurable objectives; sometimes, more general goals are listed as well. Lesson plans consist of a list of instructional materials and a description of each learning activity. A separate section may be dedicated to the pre-activities, or anticipatory set that will set the stage for the lesson. A critical part of lesson plans is a description of how students will be assessed. It is vital that the standards, objectives, and assessment all tie together. Some teachers end lesson plans with additional sections, such as a description of the modifications or accommodations they will make for students who learn differently, activities and resources that extend the learning beyond the instruction that takes place in the classroom, and technology resources that are used in the lesson or can be used to supplement it.
