Raynham District and Curriculum

Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District encompasses the neighboring towns of Bridgewater and Raynham. The district’s mission is to provide a nurturing environment that embraces diversity and to give students a high quality education. Bridgewater-Raynham has developed a curriculum pamphlet for all the grade levels from PK to 8and each content area. These pamphlets provide students and parents with the expected year-end learning outcomes for students. Regardless of age or the school they attend, students are held to a rigorous standard of academic achievement. Each year, the standards increase in complexity following the same topical strands that students have been learning about since elementary school.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Raynham District Curriculum

Bridgewater-Raynham’s elementary schools use the Storytown literacy program in the English language arts classes. To promote deeper understanding, students also become proficient in determining the meaning of unknown words and phrases by using the context in which they appear. A large component of the district’s academic philosophy is to require that students complete summer work packets in math and reading in order to make sure that they retain their learning from the school year during the lengthy break.

In Social Studies and History, students develop a sense of important concepts that they live with and will study at college. They learn about the founding of the United States and the values imparted in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Students analyze early political documents, including the Articles of Confederation, and explain how they influenced the development of the Constitution. Concepts like checks and balances and separation of powers are discussed. The cultural changes that took place during the 19th century are also a central topic of discussion.

Chalk Talk: The Secondary School Day Schedule

The majority of middle and high schools begin the day with a brief homeroom period (although some schools start off with first period right off the bat to reduce tardiness). Sometimes, students’ homeroom may be the same classroom in which they have their first period class; this happens more often in middle school. The homeroom teacher takes attendance, collects notes to be sent to the office, etc. Periods generally last about 40 minutes, with around 10-minute intervals in-between to give students time to travel from class to class. In the secondary schools, subjects can occur at any time of the day. Middle schools often separate students in each grade level into “teams,” with each team of students having the same teachers for the main content areas. All students will have English, math, social studies, and science on their schedule, with the exception of some high school seniors. Middle school students often are required to take classes such as art, music, woodshop, the family and consumer sciences, etc., whereas high school students will have more flexibility in their schedules with handpicked electives.
