Red Oak District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum at Red Oak Independent School District is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. This allows the school to develop materials that complement the units of study in each subject. This student-centered approach ensures that children enjoy learning and seek to engage in personal growth for the rest of their lives. Learning objectives, which are written broadly so that teachers may bring their own instructional methods into the learning process, allow for curricular goals to be tied to locally important factors. For instance, when students study the environment, they first look at their own to understand how the lessons are important in their daily life and then can further extrapolate the ideas in other areas.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Red Oak District Curriculum

Science is a part of the curriculum at Red Oak Independent School District. Students begin by looking at subjects from a general viewpoint, then as they mature they look at each topic closer. While studying clouds, they begin to learn the different types of clouds and what kind of weather they may predict. During the study of chemistry, students learn how substances can be combined or separated to form different substances. They continue in this way while studying life, ecology, and more. This study shows students how to look beyond the surface of things to see things from different viewpoints.

The English curriculum at Red Oak Independent School District helps students learn to read, write, and communicate thoughtfully. Reading lessons are designed to bring about an analytic perspective on the texts students read. The curriculum calls for students to read both fiction and non-fiction and develop the skills to decode meaning and intent from both. This is bolstered by teaching students about the language in grammar and vocabulary development lessons. Students also apply their literary skills to their own writing, and learn how to write for purposes such as persuasion or exposition, as well as creative writing.

Chalk Talk: Building Honesty in Children

The temptation to cheat or lie surrounds children every day. To help instill honesty in a child, parents need to model this behavior. Children look to their parents as role models so if a parent lies to receive a discount, a child may see this as acceptable behavior and take it on themselves. Parents also need to be aware of difficult situations where a lie would be easier than the truth. If the child tells the truth it is important that they receive praise for this behavior. If the child is caught telling a lie, it is important that the parent does not over-react. Calmly think about the motive for the lie. After it has been thought out, gently pull the child aside and quietly talk with the child about why he chose to lie. Honest communication is important and by demonstrating and talking about this characteristics, it may become easier for the child to talk truthfully.
